haematoma
noun
A haematoma is a blue spot that appears on the skin when we hurt ourselves. It hurts when we touch it, with a lump spreading in some cases. However, blood never comes out. At first it is blue, but as the days go by it changes its colour to lilac, red or yellow.
We can also refer to the medical term haematoma as bruise or black-and-blue mark.
This word comes from the ancient Greek hemat-, meaning ‘blood’, and -oma, meaning ‘tumour’ or ‘swelling’.
