Otitis is an inflammation of the inner ear that can be cause by, i.e., a build-up of mucus or water getting into the ear. Otitis usually hurts and can sometimes have serious consequences, which is why it is important to see a doctor when your ear hurts.

The word otitis comes from the ancient Greek ot-, meaning ‘ear’, and -itis, meaning ‘inflammation’.

It is popularly known as earache.
