appendicitis
noun
Appendicitis is a disease in which the appendix, a small, thin, finger-like pouch, attached to the beginning of the large intestine, becomes inflamed. In most cases, this disease requires surgery to remove it. Thus, if you ever notice intense pain on the right side of your stomach or close to the belly button —where your appendix is— it is important to tell an adult to get to hospital as soon as possible.
This word comes from the Latin word appendix meaning ‘something attached’, and -itis, meaning ‘inflammation’.
