surgery
noun
A surgery takes place when a surgeon cuts a damaged part of your body with a scalpel to remove a diseased organ, to cure a disease or to fix a bone. Before the surgery you are anaesthetised and during the surgery stitches and staples are used to join the cut skin. Surgeons usually perform surgery in hospitals or clinics. In some cases, surgery can be done through a natural orifice of the body, such as the belly button or mouth, where there is no need to cut you open.
We typically use the word operation for a surgical procedure.
