ultrasound

noun

An ultrasound is an image made with sound waves to view an organ or internal part of the body. The image is usually seen on a screen, for example, when a woman is pregnant, ultrasound scans are made to see how the baby is doing, but ultrasound scans can also be done on other parts of the body, such as the liver, heart, bone or kidneys.

The word comes from Latin, with ultra- “beyond” + sound.
