A ventilator is a machine used to help a person who is unable to breathe on their own due to a serious disease, such as coronavirus infection or pneumonia. The ventilator is connected to the person by a tube that carries oxygen, and the tube may be connected to a mask that is placed over the mouth or directly into the trachea.
