Anaesthesia is typically a liquid injected into your body with a syringe, which either puts a part of your body to sleep (local anaesthesia), or the whole body (general anaesthesia) so that you feel no pain during the operation. When the dentist takes out a tooth cavity they use local anaesthesia, however, if they need to operate on your heart, they will normally use general anaesthesia.
