chemists

noun

A chemists is an establishment where they sell medications (such as antibiotics, syrups, tablets, pills or vaccines), items used for healing or personal hygiene (such as bandages, plasters, moisturisers, lice shampoos or toothbrushes) and also products for babies (such as milk, nappies or dummies). There are many medications that can only be sold if you have a prescription from your doctor. Sometimes chemists that work in a chemist have to prepare special medicines for a person, for example a cream for atopic dermatitis. In the chemist you can also have your blood pressure checked, be weighed or measured.

There is a green or red cross in front of the chemists, which makes it easy to identify. There are some shops, called parapharmacies, where they sell some of the hygiene or health products that you can also find in chemists and you can buy without a prescription.
