sprain

noun

A sprain is an injury of the ligament —a bundle of fibres that attaches bones to joints— and this injury is caused when the ligaments are stretched or even torn. For example, a sprained ankle causes you to sprain the ligaments around your ankle. You can sprain any joint in your body: your knee, ankle, elbow, etc. When you have a sprain, the doctor will usually bandage the affected area, however, if a ligament is torn, you may have to wear a cast or even have to have surgery.
